October is upon us ... GET YOUR PINK ON!

In 2012, with the help of the entire community, MBA raised over $21,000 for Komen for the Cure and reminded us all of the importance of the fight against breast cancer.
In honor of those who are struggling and in memory of those we have lost, please continue to support MBA's Race for the Cure Team 2013.

MBA History and Service Clubs Partner for Fort Negley: Review of the First Outing

The first Fort Negley service project took place last Saturday (September 21st).  A handful of MBA gentleman helped weed the garden around the visitors center and clean the signs around the property.  Due to the cool weather, a lot was accomplished by these hardworking men in a short time.  The boys also got their first chance to witness the beauty of this Civil War fort while making their rounds.  The project will continue next month as we plan to help clear out invasive species.  Contact Dr. Clay Bailey or me, Clay Cavallo, if interested or curious.

The Debate Team and Best Buddies: A Day of Speaking, 9/14

On a bright and sunny September morning, the MBA Policy Debate and Extemporaneous Speech teams joined forces with local Best Buddies chapters to hold a speech coaching session from 10AM to 2PM. Under the lead of Coach Robbie Quinn, the Best Buddies graduates paired with a coach from MBA to prepare a speech about their experiences at Best Buddies.
Freshman Tony Huang with his buddy, Zach Woods
After three hours of speech-writing and speaking preparation, the buddies proceeded to speak to a supportive audience of friends and family. Each ambassador of Best Buddies did a fantastic job and put in lots of effort to make these speeches perfect. The debate team would like to thank Best Buddies for choosing MBA as their mentors in this program, and hopes that it can do similar activities in the future!

Service Club Joins Forces with the History Department, Part 2: New Project Starts This Month

Fort Negley is a historic site dating back from the Civil War.  Located next to present day Greer Stadium, the fort was the largest inland fort built during the Civil War, though it saw little combat.  The Fort Negley service project entails restoration of the site’s grounds.  It will offer students the ability to partake in the beauty of Fort Negley, to help the community of greater Nashville, and to learn some history of Union-controlled Nashville.  This project is distinct in being one of the few at MBA that entails mainly physical  labor.  Starts Saturday, September 21, and is scheduled for the 3rd Saturday of each month.

For more information on the project, contact Clay Cavallo or Dr. Bailey.

A Beautiful Day at Glen Leven: Saturday, 9/14

Please Join the Marro Advisory in the Fight Against Juvenile Diabetes

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease in which a person’s pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone essential to the ability to get energy from food. It strikes both children and adults suddenly and changes life as they know it forever. T1D causes lifelong dependence on injected or pumped insulin and carries the constant threat of complications.
T1D cannot be prevented and there is no cure.
People living with T1D and their families are quickly forced to adapt to a 24/7, unrelenting cycle of blood sugar level testing and insulin injections to manage the disease and stay alive. They must pay careful attention to diet, exercise, sleep, stress, and other factors that can upset the balance between dangerous blood sugar lows and highs. Despite careful management, the risks of long-term, life-threatening complications such as blindness, nerve damage, high blood pressure, stroke, and organ damage are a constant threat to those living with T1D.
JDRF is the only global organization with a strategic research plan to fight T1D at all ages and all stages of the disease. Driven by dedicated volunteers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with T1D, JDRF is the largest nongovernmental supporter of T1D research.
The JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes raises funds that are critical to T1D research. JDRF's strategic research plan focuses on lessening the impact of T1D on people’s lives with new therapies until a cure can be delivered. More than 200 Walks are held every year in the United States, and dozens more take place internationally. More than 900,000 people participate each year. Since 1992, the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes has raised more than $1 billion for T1D research! And we have reached this milestone through the donations, large and small, raised by our walkers.
This year we are asking the MBA community to join the effort to turn “Type One into Type None” by supporting the JDRF and its mission. For more information about the its plan and the current research efforts supported by the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, please take a few minutes to view “JDRF: Plan for the Future” at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7o8cjdv_MXk .

If you feel inclined to help our efforts, please head over to our team page located at: http://www2.jdrf.org/goto/MBARollsAgainstT1D  and donate to your favorite class or make a general donation to support our efforts. Thank you!

Amazing Effort by Senior Adam Biesman Leads to the Collection of Over 2000 Water Bottles

In an effort to help the Nashville community, MBA took on a project to collect water bottles for the vendors of The Contributor.  Over a period of two weeks, Senior Adam Biesman gathered over 2000 plastic water bottles and new reusable bottles. The fundraiser was a competition among the advisories and the advisory with the most water bottles will receive a donut party.

Thank you for your donations!

First Loaves & Fishes for the Year = Great Success

On Saturday, September 7, 20 MBA students, Mr. Lester, and Dr. Boyd went to the Loaves and Fishes soup kitchen to provide a meal for 170 of their fellow Nashvillians. Led by Senior "Top Chef" Nilay Patel, Senior "Iron Chef" Austin Dobbs, and Senior "Chef from the Muppets" Ben Chen, the Big Red served up a meal of spaghetti with meat sauce, waldorf salad, garlic bread, and green beans - with cookies for dessert. A big thanks to all who came to help out, and especially to Senior deep-sink cleaner extraordinaire, Tarun Mallipeddi. This is the 30th year that MBA has been working with Loaves and Fishes, and it got off to a great start.

I think this blog will be a great way to help spread the message about MBA service projects and keep the community updated on the Service Club's endeavors.

Look forward to a great year,

Crew Team Partners with the Nashville Clean Water Project

45 members of the MBA Crew Team partnered up the Nashville Clean Water Project over the weekend at Percy Priest Lake.  The team cleaned up trash in an area near the lake to prevent the litter from entering the watershed. The MBA Crew Team calls Percy Priest Lake their home and wanted to do their part to give back to the area they use almost daily.
